Why sacking nurses is a bad idea.

In Kenya, nurses provide a bulk of  direct patient care  at all levels of health .  These services include but not  limited to preventive and  curative. The nursing council of  Kenya  (NCK)  is mandated to set standards  for education and pra ctice of nurses (he althcare workforce report) .  Kenya has 30, 243 nurses currently  practising .  This means t hat  for every 10 000  people  there are 8.3 nurses.  This is way below the WHO recommended ratio.  In  Taita   Taveta ,   only 5 nurses take care of 10 000  people.  This not only leads to burnout  but also the deterioration of services being offered. With  the small salaries and the huge responsibili ties  coupled with burnout being  experienced by the nurses, it is now common to find many nurses leaving the country for other places with better enumeration.  This further worsens a bad situation.  If the  county  governments sack the nurses as they have continued  to th reaten them, then the  health sector ri sks getting in

Cholera situation gets worse as kisimu Garissa affected

Kisumu city has been hit hard by Cholera outbreak which started at the Kodiaga prison. The outbreak has claimed 3 lives in Kisumu. It has also claimed 8 lives nationally so far. 30 others are admitted with cholera within Kisumu city. The outbreak has also srpread to Otonglo villages in kisumu. The Cholera outbreak has led to cancellation of all food handlers licenses affecting business badly. And with poor hygiene compounded with poor drainage as seen in Kibuye market, the outbreak is set to spread further. So far, 120 cases have been reported in the past 2 months in the capital Nairobi with top hotels also affected. the government has also set up six treatment centers in informal settlements to treat cases. Some cases of cholera have also been reported in Machakos. These trends are worrying health experts since Cholera is a preventable disease. UNDERSTAND CHOLERA

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease which results when we ingest Vibrio cholerae bacteria. This bacteria is usually transmitted through foods and water contaminated by fecal matter. The bacteria produce potent toxins which binds to the walls of the small intestine and interfere with normal fluid movement across the wall of the intestine leading to excretion of large amount of fluid. Cases can occur in places where waste management systems have failed and food and water get contaminated.  In Nairobi the disease has not been limited to overcrowded slum areas alone, even well established four star and five star hotels have been affected. The situation has been made worse by the ongoing nurses strike as the striking nurses play a big   role in public education on prevention measures, screening and prompt treatment of cases.
