KENYA GRAPPLES WITH ITS WORST CHOLERA OUTBREAK

Kenya is grappling with its worst outbreak of cholera in its capital . Even the cabinet secretaries Henry Rotich and AdanMohammed were among other patients admitted to the Nairobi HospitalThey were admitted after some of them developed acute diarrhea with laboratory studies later confirming cholera. In June, a group of doctors attending a conference at Weston Hotel also developed cholera.
Cholera is a diarrheal disease caused by the bacteria vibrio cholerae. It is characterised by rise water stool with increased frequency and urgency to defecateIt quickly leads to dehydration if not promptly treated. The major treatment for cholera is rehydration and replacing of lost fluids and electrolytes. Treatment is usually done in isolated cholera treatment centers.
With the nurses strike hitting its 42nd day, the general public who cannot afford treatment at the top hospitals are feeling the heat. This presents a great challenge in screening and treating patients who present with symptoms that resemble those of cholera. The government therefore should act quickly to end the nurses strike and end the suffering of Kenyans.
